Today, Lea, Frank and I were discussing our year-end donations and which organizations we wanted to support. As we were doing this I wondered what Samuel may have said in the past on such things. He has taught us the power of giving and the importance of giving where we have received. With that in mind, I decided to kick the tires of our most recent addition to our website—Interviews with Samuel.
A quick search on the word “tithing” took me to the Winter 1989 Interview where Samuel discusses giving. Rather than paraphrase his teaching, I’ll add a link so you can get this important teaching straight from Samuel. This early teaching is still relevant today.

Wow! I was on the website ordering a yearly subscription to the Lifescapes in all three cities when I happened to go back to the Home page. I had no idea I could search for past teachings and interviews so easily! What a gift!
I especially liked this interview because it reminded me of how long I have been a part of Phoenix and how far I have come as a Guardian. When I look back at who I was in 1989, I hardly recognize who that was back there. And I have Samuel and this wonderful community of friends to thank for that. And of course Samuel would say that I should thank myself for putting in the work to be here in this place now.

I tend to equate giving with love. If you love the outdoors, hiking, growing a garden, you’ll give to nourish and protect the natural world – give of your time and energy, perhaps. If you love a child, you’ll give of your time, your wisdom – for their betterment as a human being. If you love your nation, you’ll test your social tenets by putting them out there to compete with other similar ideas. You begin to notice that time is a factor in all these endeavors. In my former career, interfacing public works with private industry and the general welfare of the public, time equates to money. And so we begin to see the wisdom of Samuel’s linked message here. Time. Energy. Ideas/wisdom. Money. In the end these all amount to the same thing. You may have a lot of personal energy but not the others, and you love your spiritual life, for instance. So you’ll give of that energy. You commit to the life. Your energy becomes an inspiration to someone else who has great ideas and understanding. Someone standing on the sidelines sees the wisdom of this spiritual work, that you’re making a difference, and they donate money. And on and on. We all have our gifts, our different ways of giving, and we spontaneously give to what we love.
